We all know this -- work can be tiring. In fact, it can sometimes be downright exhausting. But if you find yourself exhausted long term, and severely unable to climb out of a high-pressure, stressful lifestyle at work or at home, you may be suffering from something we all know as "burnout."
Burnout, which describes the result of chronic occupational stress, is a term coined by American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s.
Decades later, burnout remains a pervasive part of our lives. According to an article by Emma Seppala and Julia Moeller in Harvard Business Review, 1 in 5 highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout. Studies also show that Millennials are the most stressed out generation in the U.S. today.
Regardless of gender, this research indicates that both women and men rate work and money as significant sources of stress. If you find yourself focusing on work and money so much that you become burned out, here are 4 powerful ways to revitalize your mind:
1. Eat right.
Don't run on empty. Be sure to take care of your physical self and eat enough food (and the right food) to adequately fuel your body. It may be easy to skip a meal in order to finish work, but doing will have a negative effect on your energy and how much work you are actually able to complete -- and complete well.
2. Establish boundaries.
Do you know the difference between which tasks you will work harder for, and which activities hold a supreme amount of significance in your life? In other words: are you okay with staying late and missing a family dinner, or would you treat certain activities in your life as nonnegotiable? Get clear on what is most important to you, and you can negotiate and achieve a healthier work-life balance.
3. Find a support system (and use it).
It's healthy and effective to seek support when you need it. If you can ask your boss for scaled-back responsibilities or time off, or even ask the people closest to you for help, you will find relief from burnout when you need it the most.
4. Change your thought patterns.
As Henry Ford, American business magnate and founder of Ford Motor Company, once remarked, "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't -- you're right." Pay attention to how you speak to and about yourself, and you may find yourself accomplishing more while being in a better mood. In fact, you may find your entire life changing for the better.
It is always possible to learn how to bounce back from burnout. Ultimately, if you make positive changes in your life, you can eventually become happier, healthier, and even more productive without getting anywhere near burnout ever again. Wouldn't that be a great outcome to strive for?
