Many of my friends tell me that they want to start a business or side hustle in 2019, and the beauty of the new year is that it's easier than ever before to start up a business of your own. With the tools available today, you don't even need a huge bank balance to get started.
Here are three things you can do to make your business dreams a reality this year.
Put in a small amount of work each day.
If your New Year's resolution is to workout more, you know you'll have to put in work at the gym. If your resolution is to start a business, you'll need to put in the work at the computer and on your craft. Each day, set aside 10 to 15 minutes to work on your business. You can start off small and gradually increase your time spent.
You might think you can't do a lot with 10 minutes each day--but that's not true. I built a thriving side-hustle spending just 10 minutes a day growing an e-commerce store.
Take the plunge and officially buy a business license.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of starting a new business, but don't forget the importance of a business license and finding out all of the necessary information in regards to tax information. You might be asking, "why do I need a business license for a business that isn't even up and running?" The short answer is that having a license is for legal protection against expensive penalties and jeopardizing your business.
It's fairly simple to apply for a business license, and additional information can be found on the Small Business Administration (SBA) website. When I had my official business license, I felt a new sense of ownership and pride for my business goals.
Purchase a domain name and start a business.
Nothing says, "I mean business," like an official website and domain name. Having a landing page for all of your potential customers to go to not only makes your business appear more reputable, but it also provides your customers with confidence knowing that the company they're supporting is legit. You can also use your website to gain subscribers, send out promotion emails, and tell your story.
There are so many different hosting websites to choose from, and each one comes stocked with beautiful templates and easy to use tools to help you build a website that matches your brand. Not only do these platforms offer visually appealing settings, but they can also assist you with search engine optimization (SEO), which is a major key to success for any online business. In this day and age, you don't have to be a coding wizard to create a functioning webpage. A few out of the box services I recommend are Shopify, Wix, and Magento, and Wordpress. Once you've completed your website, you're ready to start selling your product or service. When I started my marketing agency, all I used to start selling was my website--and it only cost me a few hundred dollars.
Starting a new business can be life changing. There are many stories about side hustles that humbly began in coffee shops and turned into six-figure businesses. The hardest step is getting started.
