At the time of writing this column, I've been on a two-year journey of journaling every day. As an entrepreneur, this has led me to several fascinating discoveries about how I can create a 10X impact. I've learned more about who I want to become as a leader and discovered how I want to change the world by making it my mission to have a positive impact on the lives of one billion people.
At the core of this self-discovery process, I'm starting to learn more about what it means to lead from the heart. I've actually created an acronym for "HEART" to represent the things that we expect to happen every single day but often take for granted. As William Arthur Ward said:
"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it."
I am so grateful for everything that's happened to me so far in my career and my adventure as an entrepreneur. I want to be known for leading from my heart, so that's why I created the five principles of HEART to be sure I'm focusing on what really matters.
Here are five ways to lead from the HEART.
H - What or who makes me HAPPY?
Happiness is a choice. This is something that I did not realize early on in my life. What happens every day can make someone really unhappy because none of us are perfect. But when we choose to be happy, everything changes. You do not have to beat yourself up mentally for your shortcomings, or forces you cannot control in your life. Choosing happiness will change the trajectory of your day, every day.
E - Did I EMBRACE learning today? What lessons did I learn?
A day without learning is a day less lived. If there is one thing I want to reflect on every day, it is asking myself, "What did I really learn today?" That can be a game changer for you as you can immediately identify ways to improve the very next day.
A - What or who do I need to pay ATTENTION to in order to better myself or help others?
Focusing on the right things becomes the reason why you succeed. Paying attention to the most important things that can drive love, care, results, or whatever is the most important thing to you can change the outcome of your life.
R - What should I REPENT for so I don't make the same mistake twice?
Humility is one of the hardest things to achieve as a human being with an ego. It's a lot easier said than done. There are very few people in the world who can consistently show this behavior in their lives, and the people that do are remembered forever. Own your mistakes and move forward with humility, knowing it's okay to make mistakes because you are human.
T - What or who I am THANKFUL for?
Having gratitude is the greatest gift that can bring a smile to every single person in the world. The world is better with smiles than without it. I try to take time each week to deliver a handwritten note to someone I'm thankful for.
These five principles will radically change your outlook on what's most important. By focusing on leading from the HEART, you will start your day with happiness and end it with gratitude no matter what happens.
