Steph Curry, the Best Player in the NBA, Needed These 5 Words to Overcome Self-Doubt

Sometimes it takes our lowest moments to help us reach our highest heights.

NBA superstars like Steph Curry or Damian Lillard and of course, LeBron James, are all known for extreme competence and confidence.

That's why I was surprised by this video recently released by The Players Tribune that featured Steph Curry talking to soccer great Neymar.

In the video, Curry talks about the summer of 2012, right after he just had his second ankle surgery and wasn't feeling great about it. Curry, a self-described optimist, said with a second summer of rehab ahead, he was really down and doubting himself. He felt like he simply wouldn't be able to bounce back from what he called his "lowest of the low" moments.

That is until his wife, Ayesha, spoke a one-liner to him, five words that hit Curry hard (in a positive way).

"Don't forget who you are."


The many time all-star said the words kept him focused on the mission, helping him to win a championship (one of several for Curry) just a few years later.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Sure, Steph Curry remembered he was already one of the greatest basketball players in the world, which doesn't apply to me."

I respectfully disagree. Remembering who you are is a powerful tool for overcoming self-doubt for anyone.

Remember that you're a son, daughter, father, mother, brother or sister to someone who idolizes you. They know what you're capable of and have seen that successful person their entire life. They wouldn't see cause for you to doubt yourself nor would they want you to.

Recall that you're a friend or mentor to someone who has leaned on you through the years. Someone you've supported. Someone whose life you changed, for the better. They know the impact you have. Do you?

Recall that you're you. Your differences make you greater than, not lesser than. Compare to no one other than to who you were yesterday and to whether or not you're becoming a better version of yourself each day.

Remember how you got to who you are. Look what you've already gone through and overcome, the risks you've already taken, how far you've already come.

You see, you are enough. You have enough in you. You can overcome. You've done it before. It's who you are.

Never forget that.
