There is a saying that you can never get enough education. The most successful business people I know are always striving to learn more about how they can improve their business, their knowledge, and their life.
I've found that one of the best ways to further your education is to listen to podcasts. It seems like everyone with a microphone and a recorder has a podcast of some kind, but there are some that stand out because they speak directly to business people looking for advice, inspiration, and reassurance.
For me, podcasts also are a way to explore ways I can continue to grow both as a team leader and person. Podcasts are great too because you can listen to them anytime, anywhere--during your commute, workday break, or when you work out. I like to listen when getting ready for the day as a quick mental lift.
Here are seven of my favorites and what they can offer.
1. The $100 MBA Show.
Hosted by Omar Zenhom, who dropped out of The Wharton School to launch The $100 MBA, this podcast focuses on advice from top entrepreneurs. It's great for people who want actionable tips they can implement into their business and life. Best of all, you can get bit-sized doses of actionable advice even when you don't have a lot of time as most episodes run about 10 minutes long.
2. Oprah's SuperSoul
This is my current go-to podcast when I need a mental and spiritual pick-me-up. These are a collection of Oprah's interviews with some of her favorite thought leaders, authors, and wellness experts. Not only do they inspire and energize me, they always remind me to pause and think more about how I approach both my life and work.
3. Entrepreneurs on Fire
In Entrepreneurs on Fire, John Lee Dumas conducts interviews with top business personalities from a wide range of industries and background. Some of his guests include Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Barbara Corcoran. This is a great podcast for when you need a good jolt of inspiration.
4. How I Built This with Guy Raz
If you relish hearing the real-life journey behind the most successful companies and biggest brands, then check out this podcast from NPR. Recent episodes have focused on the founders of Flickr, Five Guys, Daybar, and Lyft. Like most of us, all great companies started from having an inspiring idea and wanting to make an impact on the world. With this podcast, I often pick up small things that I can bring into my own business.
5. Beyond the To-Do List
Sometimes you can learn more about success from failures. This podcast focuses on people who have failed in their own personal productivity and how they have since overcome that shortcoming. The interviews remind you that you are not alone in your shortcomings and offer strategies on how to learn from mistakes and gain a healthier work-life balance. We are all human, and it's good to be reminded to keep going even on the hardest days.
6. The Action Catalyst
Hosted by Dan Moore, president of The Southwestern Advantage, the oldest direct-sales company in America, his podcast often focuses on the theme of greater productivity, changing habits, and achieving goals. If you are stuck in a rut, you no doubt will find inspiration and insight from many of his guests.
7. The Tim Ferriss Show
Tim Ferriss is best known for his book, The 4-Hour Workweek and Tribe of Mentors. His approach to podcasting is to interview top experts from diversified backgrounds--such as sports, investments, politics, and comedy--about tools and tactics they use that others could apply in their lives. His mix of guests is so eclectic, you no doubt will find something of value in almost every episode.
For great business leaders, the thirst for knowledge never ends. Learning from our peers and other experts can only enhance our business, and at times, allow us to feel we are not alone and part of a greater community. You can learn so much from people who have faced the same struggles, obstacles, and successes as you. You just need to find the time to listen.
